Florida Keys Wedding Guest Travel: The Budget Nobody Plans
What it actually costs your guests to attend a Keys wedding, how they get here, and why the room block is the earliest deadline on your whole calendar.

There is a second budget, and it is not yours
Every destination wedding has two budgets. Yours, which you plan carefully, and your guests', which usually nobody plans at all.
That second budget is the one that quietly decides how many people say yes.
Here is what it looks like, built from published figures rather than guesses.
What one guest spends
On our stated planning assumption of three nights:
Lodging is the largest line and the one that moves most. Across the 2025 fiscal year the chain averaged $345 a night at 72.8 percent occupancy, per Tourism Economics via Visit Florida Keys and Key West.
Everything else on the ground. The Monroe County Tourist Development Council visitor study puts non lodging spend at about $140 per person per night. Food, drinks, the boat, the thing they did on the Saturday morning. Over three nights, about $420.
Getting here. Bureau of Transportation Statistics data for late 2025 shows average domestic itinerary fares of $387 into Key West, $346 into Miami and $269 into Fort Lauderdale.
Total, per traveling guest: roughly $1,200 to $1,400. For a couple traveling together, roughly $2,500.
Fifty traveling guests is a meaningful amount of other people's money. It is worth knowing early rather than late.
How they actually get here
Key West International Airport (EYW) is served by Allegiant, American, Breeze, Delta, JetBlue and United. It is the shortest route and the most expensive one, and its schedule is thinner than a mainland airport's, which matters when a flight cancels the day before a wedding.
Florida Keys Marathon International Airport (MTH) has no scheduled commercial service. Charter and private aircraft only. Guests cannot fly there.
Miami International (MIA) and Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International (FLL) are the mainland options, and where most guests for an Upper or Middle Keys wedding will land.
From Miami, published road distances are Key Largo 58 miles, Islamorada 76 miles, Marathon 111 miles, Key West 159 miles, along the Overseas Highway.

The one road
The Overseas Highway runs about 113 miles across 42 bridges, and the mile marker system counts down from 127 near Florida City to zero in Key West.
There is one road. That sentence does more planning work than any other in this guide.
It means a single accident south of Homestead delays every guest still on the mainland. It means arrival times cluster and then scatter. It means a welcome party that starts too early loses the people still driving, and one that starts late loses the people who have been traveling since dawn.
For guests who do not want to drive it, Keys Shuttle runs door to door from Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports seven days a week, FlixBus serves Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and Key West six days a week, and Greyhound has scheduled stops between Miami airport and the Keys. The bus from Miami to Key West takes about four hours.

The room block is the deadline nobody tells you about
Everything above is what your guests spend. What decides whether they spend it in one place or five is a decision you make roughly a year before the wedding, when it feels far too early to be thinking about hotels.
Get it right and your guests book through a link, arrive at the same address, and can share a taxi. Get it late and they are scattered across whatever had availability, which is worse for them and considerably worse for your welcome party.
There is real money in the contract terms too, and a clause that can leave you paying for rooms nobody slept in. We have written all of it up separately: [the room block guide](/guides/florida-keys-wedding-room-block) covers courtesy versus contracted blocks, attrition, cutoff dates and the five questions to ask a property before you sign.
What we handle
Room blocks at Keys properties matched to your group and budget. Courtesy versus contracted, and which your headcount calls for. Attrition terms and cutoff dates. Guest booking links. Airport guidance across Key West, Marathon, Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Ground transport for arrivals, the welcome party and the wedding day. Villas and vacation rentals for family groups. Pre and post wedding stays.

Methodology: The Miami mileage figures for Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, and the Lower Keys come from the Florida Keys tourism board's How to Get Here page as captured on July 10, 2025, and read on October 2, 2026. They are dated archive figures, not live-verified distances or newly measured airport routes.
