Florida Keys Wedding Weekend Itinerary: A Three Night Plan That Works
What to schedule across a Keys wedding weekend, when guests actually arrive, and the two mistakes that cost couples the welcome party.

The assumption this is built on
Three nights. That is our stated planning assumption for a Keys wedding weekend, and it is what most of this site's cost figures are built on. It is an assumption, not a sourced statistic.
Three nights works because of the drive. Guests who have traveled 159 miles past Miami are not doing it for one night, and a fourth night is a real ask of people paying their own way.
Thursday: arrival
The thing nobody plans for: guests do not arrive together.
Some fly into Key West. Some land in Miami or Fort Lauderdale and drive, which from Miami is 58 miles to Key Largo, 76 to Islamorada, 111 to Marathon and 159 to Key West, on one road with no alternate route.

Realistically your guests arrive across a five hour spread. Build the evening around that rather than against it.
What to schedule: nothing formal before six, and nothing that requires everybody. An open bar tab at one place from six onward, with people drifting in as they land, does more for the weekend than a seated dinner half the guests miss.
What not to schedule: a welcome party at five. Guests who left Miami at two in the afternoon on a Friday will not be there, and they will spend their first evening apologising.
Friday: the one shared thing, then the rehearsal
Morning is guests' own. The Keys are good at this: John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo is America's first undersea park at about 70 nautical square miles, with glass bottom boats, diving, snorkelling and kayaking. In Islamorada it is the boats. In Key West it is the town itself.

Schedule one optional shared activity, mid morning, and make clear it is optional. A boat, a snorkel trip, a walking tour. Half your guests will come and the other half will be grateful they did not have to.
Afternoon: rehearsal, if your venue allows one. Our officiant service includes an on site rehearsal where the venue permits, as part of the ceremony package from $450.
Evening: the welcome party. This is the emotional center of the weekend and it is worth spending on. It is also the event most often undercooked, because couples have spent their attention on Saturday.
Ceremony and event sound is available from $450, live musicians from $650, and event lighting from $1,200. A welcome party with music and lighting reads as an event. One without reads as drinks.
Saturday: the wedding
Everybody already knows how to plan this day. Two Keys specific notes:
Heat and sun. NOAA National Weather Service normals for Key West, 1991 to 2020, put average highs at 89.0F in September, 75.8F in January. An outdoor ceremony at two in the afternoon in August is a different event from the same ceremony at five.
Rain is seasonal, not random. September averages 7.24 inches of rain, the wettest month of the year. January averages 1.83 inches. A Keys wedding in September needs a real covered plan, not a hopeful one.

Sunday: the farewell, then the drive
Brunch, late, and short. Guests are driving three or four hours back up the highway, or catching a flight out of a small airport with a thin schedule. A brunch that starts at eleven and ends by one gets everybody home. One that runs to three does not.
This is also where the honeymoon decision lands. Some couples fly out the morning after. Some take a few nights somewhere close and travel properly months later when the calendar is kinder. Both work. What does not work is leaving it late enough that whatever is still available decides for you.
The two mistakes
One: scheduling the welcome party against the traffic. Arrival day is a transport problem wearing a party's clothes. Push it later than feels necessary.
Two: solving the wedding day transport and forgetting the other three. Arrivals, welcome party, wedding day and departures are four separate problems. Couples reliably solve one.
We arrange ground transport across all four alongside the room block, through an independent travel advisor affiliated with Fora Travel, rather than as a separate exercise.
