Key West or Islamorada: The Real Difference for a Wedding
Eighty three miles apart and two genuinely different weekends. Walkability, guest cost, transport, and how to tell which one your guest list is asking for.

The honest version
This is not a close comparison. These are two different weddings that happen to be in the same island chain.
Key West sits 159 road miles from Miami International. Islamorada sits 76.

Everything below follows from that, and from one other fact: Old Town Key West is walkable and Islamorada is not.
Key West
Your guests walk. This is the single biggest practical difference, and it is a budget line. If your ceremony, reception and guest rooms all sit inside Old Town, ground transport is a few taxis and some golf carts. In Islamorada it is shuttles, every time, for everything.
There is something to do when you are not there. Duval Street, the sunset at Mallory Square, Fort Zachary Taylor, the Butterfly Conservatory, the boats. Guests with a free afternoon fill it themselves. You are not responsible for entertaining people between events.
Its own airport. Key West International is served by Allegiant, American, Breeze, Delta, JetBlue and United. Guests who will pay to skip the drive can. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics put the average domestic itinerary fare into Key West at $387 in late 2025, against $346 into Miami and $269 into Fort Lauderdale.
The costs. It is the furthest and the most expensive, and it sits at the top of the Keys rate range rather than the middle. Its flight schedule is thin, which matters when a flight cancels the day before the wedding. And it is a party town whether or not your weekend is a party, which some guest lists love and some do not.
Islamorada
It is half the drive. Seventy six miles against 159. For guests traveling with small children, elderly relatives, or from the west coast, that is the difference between coming and sending a card.
Guests land in the same place. Islamorada's waterfront resorts with their own docks are the kind of property a wedding takes over. One block, one address, one welcome party that does not need a shuttle.
It is quieter, deliberately. Nothing competes with your wedding. Nobody wanders off to Duval Street at eleven and reappears at the brunch looking like it.
The costs. Guests need a car or a shuttle for everything, including the welcome party. There is less to do independently, so more of the weekend is yours to programme and pay for. And there is no meaningful commercial airport, so effectively every guest drives from the mainland.
Where they are genuinely the same
On money the two are far closer than eighty three miles suggests. Both sit inside the same chain-wide average of $345 a night for the 2025 fiscal year at 72.8 percent occupancy.
On our three night planning assumption, and adding about $140 per person per night of non lodging spend per the Monroe County TDC visitor study plus airfare, a traveling guest lands around $1,200 to $1,400 in either place.
Key West is not dramatically more expensive per guest than Islamorada. It is further, and the thing that closes the gap is that your guests spend less on ground transport once they are there.
Both set wedding room blocks nine to twelve months out. Both are on the one road. The weather is the same.
The deciding question
Not which place you prefer. Which weekend you want to be responsible for.
Key West runs itself. You programme three events and the town fills the gaps. Islamorada does not run itself, which means the weekend is exactly what you built and nothing else, and some couples want precisely that.
If your guest list is large, spread out, or includes people for whom four hours of driving is the deciding factor, Islamorada. If your guest list is people who will come regardless and you would rather they had a town to explore, Key West.
Either way
Our entertainment and production rates are the same in both, from the 2026 Pricing and Services Guide: ceremony sound from $450, officiant from $450, wedding weekend DJ starting at $2,500 live musicians from $650, Digital Booth $695 and Print Booth $995 event lighting from $1,200.
The room block is the earliest deadline in both. The block clock runs identically in both places, and it starts earlier than almost anything else you will book. [Room block guide](/guides/florida-keys-wedding-room-block).
