Marathon Wedding Cost: The Middle Keys Weekend, Priced Honestly

111 miles from Miami, thirteen islands across ten, and the best boat access in the chain. What a Marathon wedding costs you and what it costs your guests.

Where Marathon actually is

Marathon sits roughly halfway down the chain: 111 road miles from Miami International Airport, per Visit Florida Keys and Key West, which Visit Florida puts at about two hours and twenty minutes on the Overseas Highway.

It is not one island. It is a community of thirteen islands strung across about ten miles, which is why a Marathon address is a mile marker rather than a neighborhood.

The Seven Mile Bridge runs south from it, about 6.8 miles of it, and the old bridge alongside is now a walking and cycling route.

Why couples choose it

It is the halfway point, and that is a real argument. Guests coming from Miami drive two hours and twenty rather than nearly four. Guests who want to see Key West can do it as a day trip rather than as the whole weekend.

The water access is the best in the chain for a group. Marathon holds roughly 1,200 wet slips and 1,200 dry slips. If your weekend has boats in it, and a lot of Middle Keys weekends do, this is the base that makes it straightforward rather than logistical.

The beaches are genuinely good. Sombrero Beach in Marathon itself, Curry Hammock State Park at about 1,000 acres, and Bahia Honda State Park just south. Curry Hammock and Bahia Honda both carry beach wheelchairs and accessible trails and restrooms, which matters if your guest list needs them.

There is something for the guests who are not drinking. The Turtle Hospital and the Dolphin Research Center are the two things Middle Keys guests remember, and they fill a Saturday morning without you programming it.

The cost picture

Marathon's inventory leans toward mid-sized resorts and marina properties rather than premium waterfront or historic inns, which puts it at or slightly under the chain-wide average of $345 a night for the 2025 fiscal year.

Season moves a Marathon rate considerably more than Marathon does: $419.72 across the Keys in April 2026, $290.13 in June.

What a guest spends. On our three night planning assumption: roughly $520 to $630 per person on lodging sharing a room, about $420 in non lodging spend at the Monroe County TDC visitor study figure of about $140 per person per night, and $269 to $346 in airfare into Fort Lauderdale or Miami.

That is roughly $1,200 to $1,400 per traveling guest, and about $2,500 for a couple traveling together. The same band as everywhere else in the Keys. Marathon's saving is not in the nightly rate, it is in the drive.

The thing to plan around

Marathon airport has no scheduled commercial service. Florida Keys Marathon International Airport takes charter and private aircraft only. Your guests cannot book a flight there, whatever a search engine suggests.

That means effectively every guest drives from Miami or Fort Lauderdale, or flies into Key West and drives fifty miles back north, which almost nobody does. Plan the welcome party for a guest list arriving by car across a five hour spread, and plan it later than feels necessary.

And the ten mile spread matters. A Marathon wedding where the ceremony, the block and the welcome party sit at three different mile markers is a shuttle problem. Pick the lodging around the venue rather than the other way round.
